The Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF–NCCC) has successfully concluded a one-day Cybercrime Awareness Campaign in Abuja, marking a significant push to combat the rising tide of online crimes and promote digital literacy among Nigerians.
Focus on Digital Resilience
The campaign, which aimed at fostering responsible online behavior and building public resilience against cyber threats, was detailed in a statement issued on Sunday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin.
IGP’s Commitment: The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, reaffirmed the commitment of the NPF to ensuring a safer digital space for all Nigerians, as represented by the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, FCID, DIG Sadiq Abubakar.
Collective Effort: CP Uche Henry, Director of the NPF–NCCC, emphasized that the fight against cybercrime requires a collective national effort, stating that “today’s digital era demands that all Nigerians are not just users but also guardians of their own cybersecurity.”
Sustained Strategy: CP Henry highlighted the importance of sustained public education and technological investment, adding that the centre will continue to scale up cyber education, enhance reporting mechanisms, and strengthen enforcement capacity.
Campaign Impact and Mandate
The event successfully attracted over 3,000 participants from schools, government institutions, private organizations, and security agencies. Activities included an awareness walk, distribution of sensitisation materials, and a musical fiesta designed to engage attendees.
The NPF–NCCC, established as a specialized unit, combats various cyber-enabled crimes, including online fraud, identity theft, financial scams, and cyberbullying. The center enhances Nigeria’s capacity in prevention and digital forensics by working closely with key partners like the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Addressing the Growing Threat
The awareness drive comes as Nigeria, with its rapidly expanding digital economy, faces increasing cyber threats. Reports indicate that the country loses billions of naira annually to cybercrime forms like phishing, ransomware, and financial fraud schemes.
The NPF–NCCC’s campaign demonstrates the Force’s renewed drive to empower citizens on how to “Stay Smart, Stay Safe online” and promote a national culture of cyber vigilance.
