BENIN CITY — No fewer than 50 persons were arrested in Benin on Saturday for allegedly violating Edo State’s environmental sanitation laws.
The arrests were made in Egor Local Government Area during a monitoring operation led by the new Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in the state, Mr. Saidi Akintayo.
Akintayo, who led his management team, said the exercise aimed to ensure compliance with the state government’s monthly environmental sanitation directive. The operation covered strategic areas including Third East Circular Road Junction, Sapele Road, Ekiosa Market, Siloko Road, Ugbowo, and New Benin Market.
“A clean environment is a healthy environment,” the commandant stated. “It is our collective duty as citizens to ensure that our surroundings are kept clean at all times.”
He added that the corps would continue to support government efforts by enforcing compliance and sensitizing the public on hygiene.
The NSCDC boss described the sight of residents and traders sweeping drains and clearing refuse as “encouraging.”
The 50 suspected offenders were later taken to the Egor Local Government secretariat, where they were received by the Executive Chairman, Osaro Eribo, and arraigned before a mobile court.
Commandant Akintayo lauded the synergy among local authorities, the environmental task force, and security agencies as “crucial to sustaining the gains of the exercise.”
“Our presence underscores the Corps’ unwavering commitment to protecting lives, property, and the environment. We will continue to stand with the government to ensure Edo remains clean and safe for all,” he added.
In a similar development, the Chairman of Oredo Local Government, Mr. Gabriel Idusere, who also monitored the exercise, commended residents for their cooperation.
However, Idusere acknowledged public complaints regarding delays in refuse evacuation. He assured that the council had put measures in place for prompt waste collection, particularly in markets and densely populated areas.
