Anambra Police Arrest 7 Suspected Cultists During Initiation, Foil Alleged Election Thuggery Plot
The Anambra State Police Command has arrested seven suspected cultists allegedly being groomed for thuggery ahead of the governorship election scheduled for November 8, 2025.
The suspects were apprehended in the early hours of Sunday, October 26, 2025, during their initiation ceremony in a bush at Obinagu, Abagana, located in the Njikoka Local Government Area of the state.
In a statement released on Sunday, Police Spokesman SP Tochukwu Ikenga said the arrests were made by operatives of the Special Anti-Cult Squad (SPACS), Enugu-Ukwu, in collaboration with Agunechemba Vigilante operatives.
The suspects, later confirmed to be members of the Black Axe Confraternity, were named as:
- Ugorji Emmanuel, 29
- Ogamba Chinuike Anthony, 22
- Chibuzor Agudiegu, 25
- Destiny Okasi, 22
- Udewulu Nzube, 19
- Ifeanyi Anikpe, 21
- Sunday Akuma, 20
Ikenga stated, “Preliminary information revealed that the initiation activities were part of their evil ceremony and grooming for election thuggery in Njikoka and Anaocha Local Government areas.”
He added that the suspects attempted to flee upon sighting the operatives but were apprehended after a swift chase.
Items recovered at the scene included a 25-litre keg containing a red liquid substance, red ritual cloth, two wooden drums, and footwear belonging to the suspects and other accomplices who escaped.
”An investigation is ongoing to identify and arrest fleeing members of the syndicate and to uncover other linked cult cells within the axis,” Ikenga noted.
The statement concluded that the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has reiterated the Command’s intolerance for activities that threaten peace, especially during the election build-up. The CP urged parents, community leaders, and youth groups to intensify moral guidance and called on the public to continue providing credible information to assist in crime prevention.
This incident follows a similar one in September, when the Command arrested four suspected cultists after a violent clash in the Nsugbe community, Anambra East Local Government Area. That clash reportedly occurred behind Nwafor Orizu College of Education, where individuals were seen attacking one another with dangerous weapons.
