Suspected Drunk Driver Dies in Midnight Surulere Crash

A motorist has died in a lone vehicle accident under the Alaka Bridge in Surulere, Lagos, after allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol.

The crash, involving a navy blue Toyota Camry, occurred around 11:45 p.m. on Saturday.

In a statement on Sunday, Adebayo Taofiq, the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), said preliminary investigations indicated the driver was intoxicated.

The vehicle (registration number EKY 311 GK) was reportedly travelling at high speed inward Iponri when the driver lost control.

”The vehicle somersaulted repeatedly, culminating in a fatal impact that claimed the driver’s life at the scene,” Taofiq stated.

He added that eyewitness accounts and forensic evidence gathered at the site “corroborated reports that the deceased was intoxicated, a condition that severely impaired his judgment and reaction time, leading to the catastrophic loss of control.”

Officers from the newly inaugurated LASTMA 24-hour Night Operations Squad and the Nigeria Police Force responded to the incident.

Taofiq noted that police officers from the Bode Thomas Division documented the crash and released the deceased’s remains to his wife and family, who were contacted using a mobile phone recovered from the wreckage.

LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the crash as “a tragic yet sobering reminder of the fatal consequences of intoxicated driving.”

He urged motorists to remain vigilant and responsible, especially during the Ember Months, a period historically associated with increased road accidents. Bakare-Oki also reiterated the agency’s commitment to its “Safe Roads, Safe Lives… LASTMA Cares” campaign, which aims to reduce drunk driving through enforcement and public enlightenment.
