Herbalist and Brother Arrested in Delta for Kidnapping and Killing Client, Motorcyclist The Delta State Police Command has arrested a 20-year-old herbalist, Amechi Okwuokenye, and his 26-year-old brother, Smart Okwuokenye, in the Owa-Alidima area of Ika North East Local Government for the alleged kidnapping and murder of two men.
The victims were identified as the herbalist’s client, Friday Liberty (22), and a commercial motorcycle rider, Isioma Ugbeje. Their bodies were recovered from a soakaway pit at Okwuokenye’s shrine. Command spokesperson SP Bright Edafe confirmed the arrests on Sunday, stating that the double murder followed a failed \text{N}10 million ransom demand. Investigation Leads to Herbalist Hiding in Refrigerator The case began on September 30, 2025, when client Friday Liberty visited the herbalist, a long-time acquaintance, and subsequently vanished. Deception: After Liberty’s family grew worried, they contacted Amechi Okwuokenye. The herbalist denied seeing the victim but offered to perform “spiritual incantations” for his safe return. Police Petition: Following the herbalist’s fruitless intervention, the family filed a petition on October 14, 2025. The Arrest: An intelligence-led investigation identified the herbalist as the last person to contact Liberty. Following surveillance at his shrine, Okwuokenye was apprehended on October 23, 2025, after being discovered hiding inside a refrigerator on the premises. Ransom Failure Led to Double Homicide Upon interrogation, Amechi Okwuokenye confessed that he and his brother, Smart, had planned the crime. He revealed that Liberty was a customer who frequently sought charms to “hypnotise clients so they could give him money easily.” Desperate for cash, Smart advised his brother to lure a client for a kidnapping scheme, and Liberty was chosen. The suspects: Kidnapped both Liberty and the motorcyclist, Isioma Ugbeje. Demanded a \text{N}10 million ransom from their families. When the ransom attempt failed, they murdered both men and disposed of their remains in a soakaway pit near the shrine. The bodies of the deceased have been evacuated for autopsy. The suspects remain in custody, and Olufemi Abaniwonda, the Commissioner of Police for Delta State, has assured the public that justice will be served.
