The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has handed over a sealed petrol station in Badagry, Lagos State, to the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) for further regulatory action.
In a statement on Monday, the NCS disclosed that its special task force, “Operation Whirlwind,” transferred control of the station, identified as Adeola Ade Plc, on Friday.
The station, located along Owode-Apa Road, was sealed by the task force on October 4, 2025, after it was found to be “operating in violation of standards and regulations governing petroleum retail operations in Nigeria.”
During the official handover ceremony, the Coordinator of Operation Whirlwind, Assistant Comptroller-General (ACG) Kola Oladeji, stated the move sends a “clear message to economic saboteurs.”
He warned that both government agencies “remain resolute in sustaining enforcement against non-compliance within the petroleum downstream sector.”
ACG Oladeji also commended the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, for its critical role in intelligence gathering and policy coordination, adding that continued collaboration is “crucial to preserving the integrity of Nigeria’s energy infrastructure.”
Accepting the handover, Ivy Agbenselugbo, the Head of Retail Infrastructure at the NMDPRA, emphasised the severe economic and environmental consequences of fuel smuggling and diversion.
“Fuel smuggling and diversion not only cause significant revenue losses but also pose serious environmental risks,” she said.
Agbenselugbo stressed the need for a stronger partnership between the two agencies to tackle petrol diversion through “intelligence sharing, operational synergy, and improved environmental safeguards.”
The event concluded with the formal signing of handover documents, symbolising a renewed commitment by both agencies to sanitise the petroleum downstream sector.
