Certificate Racketeering Rock: Kogi Poly Suspends Five Staff, Arrests Four Students Over Massive Forgery Scandal
Lokoja, Kogi – The management of Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, has launched a major investigation into a sprawling certificate forgery and document falsification syndicate operating within the institution. The crackdown has so far resulted in the suspension of five staff members and the arrest of four individuals identified as students.
Rector of the Polytechnic, Prof. Salisu Ogbo, disclosed the development at a press conference in Lokoja on Friday, highlighting a systemic attempt to undermine the institution’s credibility.
The Anatomy of the Scam
The investigation centers on a syndicate involving students, non-students, and “a few dishonest staff members” accused of manipulating academic records for financial gain.
Key revelations from the Rector’s address include:
* Suspects: The syndicate involves a total of nine suspects—five suspended staff members and four arrested individuals identified as students.
* Forged Certificates: Authorities have uncovered 30 forged original National Diploma (ND) certificates that were reportedly sold to prospective buyers.
* Brazen Attempt: Prof. Ogbo noted the audacity of the fraudsters, who used the forged ND results to apply for Higher National Diploma (HND) admission at the same institution.
* Result Manipulation: The suspects colluded with result processors to prepare academic transcripts for individuals with multiple course carryovers who refused to sit for their examinations, falsely certifying them as graduates.
How the Fraud Was Uncovered
The elaborate fraud was unmasked following meticulous intelligence reports and routine verification exercises conducted by the Polytechnic’s Admission, ICT, and Security Units.
> “These individuals compromised our security arrangements and tampered with the security features on our Statements of Result,” Prof. Ogbo stated. He stressed that such criminal acts were an “assault on the credibility and reputation” of the Polytechnic and would be “allowed to go unpunished.”
