60 and Still Going Strong! Tinubu Applauds Veteran Commentator Reuben Abati

President Bola Tinubu just sent warm wishes to respected journalist and former presidential spokesperson, Dr. Reuben Abati, as he marks his 60th birthday.

The President dubbed Abati an accomplished thinker and a loyal public voice who has massively shaped Nigeria’s media and national conversation.

In a personal statement released Friday, Tinubu praised Abati, his pal whom he jokingly calls “Rubi Rubi,” for his amazing range and top-tier performance in so many areas.

Thinker, author, columnist, lawyer, and broadcaster—Dr. Abati has shone brightly everywhere he’s been: in the university as a student and lecturer, as Head of The Guardian’s Editorial Board, as a writer, and now as a popular TV anchor. His smart takes, regular opinions, and TV breakdowns never fail to educate and motivate.

“I salute Dr. Abati for his time serving Nigeria as Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to former President Goodluck Jonathan, plus his outstanding work in the media,” Tinubu stated.

He highlighted Abati’s “sharp articles, timely input, and television analysis” for continuing to shed light on issues and inspire Nigerians. The President further stressed that Abati’s innovation and diverse background have supercharged national debates on key public matters.

Tinubu also gave a shout-out to the launch of Abati’s trio of new books—Portraits: “People, Politics and Society,” “A Love Letter and Other Stories,” and “How Goodluck Jonathan Became President”—released to celebrate his 60th.

“I stand with the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), family, and friends in celebrating this iconic writer. I pray God grants him long years, good health, and the drive to keep contributing to the nation and humanity,” the statement concluded.

Born on November 7, 1965, Abati is a well-known newspaper columnist and lead presenter on Arise TV. He ran as the Peoples Democratic Party’s Deputy Governorship candidate in Ogun State during the 2019 election. He holds a degree in Theatre Arts from the University of Calabar and is a senior fellow at the Olusegun Obasanjo Centre for Cultural Studies and the National Open University of Nigeria.
