Tragedy in Niger State: Security Personnel Killed in Ambush on Lawmaker’s Convoy

A wave of condemnation has hit the capital after the convoy of a Niger State lawmaker, Honourable Jafaru Mohammed Ali (representing Borgu and Agwara Federal Constituency), was tragically attacked in an ambush earlier this week.

The incident, which occurred on Tuesday afternoon along the dangerous Lumma–Babanna Road in Borgu Local Government Area, tragically claimed the lives of several security operatives.

The Attack and the High Price of Service

The ambush took place between 1 pm and 2 pm as the lawmaker’s convoy traveled for a constituency engagement toward Babanna, a community close to the volatile Republic of Benin border. This corridor is tragically notorious for bandit incursions and the movement of armed criminal groups.

In a statement released by the House Spokesman, Akin Rotimi, the House of Representatives strongly condemned the incident, describing it as a “cowardly and tragic attack.”

* Fatalities: Several gallant security operatives were killed in the line of duty.

* Injuries: The lawmaker’s driver and several aides sustained injuries.

* Damage: Multiple vehicles in the convoy suffered extensive damage.

The “Green Chamber” emphasized that the remote location of the attack demonstrates the lengths to which lawmakers and their staff go to ensure services reach every Nigerian, even in the most challenging terrains.

Reps Mourn and Demand Action

The House expressed deep sorrow, extending heartfelt condolences to the families of the brave operatives who “paid the supreme price.” They also wished the injured a swift recovery.

In response, the lawmakers have called on security agencies to:

* Launch a thorough and immediate investigation into the ambush.

* Ensure the perpetrators are swiftly brought to justice.

* Implement measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The House reaffirmed its legislative commitment to supporting the security agencies in the collective effort to eradicate banditry, terrorism, and other forms of criminality that continue to threaten national peace.

Niger State: A Region Under Siege

This attack is the latest in a series of violent incidents plaguing Niger State, particularly the border areas. Recent reports underscore the escalating danger:

* September 17: Gunmen on motorbikes killed 22 villagers in the western part of the state, with many victims targeted during a baptism ceremony.

* June: No fewer than 17 soldiers were killed in a fierce gun duel with suspected bandits in the Bangi community, a notorious corridor for kidnappings and cattle rustling.

The renewed focus on the security vulnerabilities of political figures highlights the wider crisis affecting every resident in these volatile communities.

What legislative steps do you believe the House of Representatives should take next to bolster security forces operating in these high-r

isk border communities?
