Tinubu Mourns Veteran Labour Activist Abiodun Aremu, Hails His Legacy

Abuja, Nigeria – President Bola Tinubu has expressed profound grief over the passing of veteran labour activist and rights campaigner, Comrade Abiodun Aremu, describing him as a steadfast defender of workers’ rights and a tireless advocate for social justice.

Aremu, 65, died on Sunday evening, October 12, 2025, after being struck by a hit-and-run driver in Ota, Ogun State, around 6 p.m. while crossing the road near his residence. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where efforts to resuscitate him failed.

In a statement issued on Monday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President extended his condolences to Aremu’s family, friends, associates, and the broader labour and civil society movements in Nigeria.

President Tinubu praised the late activist’s lifelong dedication to empowering workers, noting that he “devoted his time, energy, and resources to improving the conditions of the Nigerian working class.”

Praise for a ‘Selfless Patriot’

The President also commiserated with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), and civil society organisations, describing Aremu as “one of their most consistent partners in the struggle for a better life for all.”

“Aremu was a teacher, an organiser, a conscience of the people. He shaped minds and inspired generations of Nigerians on integrity, justice and patriotism. The nation has lost a selfless patriot and a tireless fighter for the common good,” the President remarked.

He further described Aremu as a courageous comrade who “remained steadfast in his beliefs and never wavered in his defence of the oppressed.”

The President concluded by praying for the peaceful repose of Aremu’s soul and for strength and comfort for his family and loved ones.

Burial Arrangements

Comrade Abiodun Aremu is scheduled to be buried on Thursday, October 23, 2025. The interment will take place at No. 30, Kabiru Fatoye Street, opposite Alaka Field, Ijako Sugar Bus Stop, along Ifo Road on the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway.
