Kano/Lagos, Nigeria—In a series of significant operations, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has reported major drug busts, including the arrest of a businessman who had ingested and concealed a large amount of cocaine and the interception of methamphetamine hidden inside ceramic tiles destined for the UK.
The MAKIA Cocaine Bust
Operatives at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA) arrested 52-year-old businessman Ejiofor Godwin Emeka upon his arrival from Bangkok, Thailand. Emeka, who runs boutiques in Lagos and Onitsha, was taken into custody on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, based on credible intelligence.
A body scan confirmed the presence of illicit drugs, leading to the immediate recovery of 58 wraps of cocaine concealed in his private part. Following days of observation, Ejiofor subsequently egested an additional 69 pellets of the drug. In total, the NDLEA recovered 127 wraps of cocaine, weighing 1.388 kilograms, from the suspect.
Methamphetamine Hidden in Ceramics
In Lagos, NDLEA agents intercepted three major consignments of illicit drugs headed to the United Kingdom through a courier company. The most notable seizure involved 1.74 kg of methamphetamine meticulously concealed within blocks of glass ceramics. Other thwarted shipments included:
Pentazocine and tramadol injections.
Tramadol capsules hidden inside a Vitamin C container.
In separate operations, the agency also foiled attempts to export:
2.6kg of skunk and tapentadol concealed in black soap tablets (headed to Turkey).
169 grams of cocaine hidden in women’s handbags (headed to Australia).
568 grams of “Loud” cannabis concealed in herbal containers (headed to the UAE).
Opioid Trafficking and State-Wide Seizures
At the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, officers seized 27,510 pills of rohypnol hidden in sachets of alcoholic drinks bound for South Africa. A follow-up operation led to the arrest of the alleged mastermind, Samuel Omoruyi (alias Yellow), at Oyingbo market.
Separately, an Italy-based businessman, Enehizena Augustine Uyimwen, was arrested at the same airport while trying to export 3,700 pills of tramadol 225mg and 2,600 tabs of tapentadol 200mg concealed in food items. He reportedly confessed to trafficking the opioids for a fee of €945.
Other major drug seizures reported across Nigeria include:
Osun State: The seizure of 635 kilograms of skunk from a Toyota Hiace bus, leading to the arrest of two suspects at Omifufun village.
Niger State: The arrest of a suspect with a large cache of controlled substances, including 22,000 capsules of tramadol and 150,000 pills of exol-5.
Ondo State: The recovery of 312kg of skunk from a bush camp, with additional seizures along the Benin-Lagos expressway.
Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), commended the officers for their tenacity, professionalism, and balanced approach, urging them to maintain the momentum in the agency’s drug control and War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) sensitization efforts.
