ADO EKITI, NIGERIA — Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Biodun Oyebanji, has inaugurated a new state-of-the-art Pharma-Grade Warehouse to combat the circulation of fake and substandard medicines and ensure a consistent supply of quality drugs.
Speaking at the launch event on Friday at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Governor Oyebanji said the facility is a cornerstone of his administration’s commitment to improving public health and fighting drug counterfeiting head-on. The project, supported by the Global Fund, aims to provide the state’s Drug Management Agency (DMA) with the infrastructure needed to operate at the highest standards.
“This facility will ensure the continuous availability of quality, safe, and affordable medical supplies for hospitals across the state,” Oyebanji stated. “With this, Ekiti State can now effectively curb the circulation of fake drugs, which predispose our citizens to sudden death and other ailments.”
The governor highlighted significant progress already made, noting that since the DMA’s establishment, regular access to essential medicines in the state’s health facilities has risen from 43% to 89%.
Alongside the warehouse inauguration, the governor also flagged off the distribution of new equipment to 103 revitalised Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across all 16 local government areas. This initiative, part of the World Bank-supported IMPACT project, is designed to reduce child and maternal mortality rates and broaden healthcare access at the grassroots level.
Dr. Oyebanji Filani, the Commissioner for Health, praised the governor’s commitment, while the DMA’s General Manager, Olajide Kolawole, described the warehouse as a “loud testament” to the promise of improved healthcare. Kolawole also appealed for additional funding, utility vehicles for distribution, and a mini-laboratory to further enhance quality control.
