The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) has sealed several establishments, including a church and a factory, in a renewed crackdown on environmental pollution.
The enforcement operation, which took place on Monday in the Ifako-Ijaiye and Igando areas, targeted premises with repeated complaints of noise and air pollution.
In a statement on Tuesday, LASEPA confirmed sealing the Cherubim and Seraphim (King of Kings) Church in Ifako-Ijaiye, a fufu-making shop, and Tyonex Nigeria Limited in Igando.
LASEPA General Manager, Dr. Babatunde Ajayi, stated the operation was necessary to protect public health. He noted that the agency had received multiple complaints from residents about the sealed church, which was operating illegally within a residential estate.
”We specifically frowned at the Cherubim and Seraphim Church… with several complaints of unabated noise infractions brought against the Church by the residents,” Ajayi said.
He emphasized that while freedom of worship is guaranteed, it must not infringe on the rights of others.
”No individual or association is allowed to infringe on the fundamental rights of others or impact negatively on the health of other neighbours in the name of religious activities,” Ajayi added, reiterating the agency’s zero-tolerance policy for pollution.
This action follows another recent enforcement where the state sealed the sewage facility at Yaba College of Technology for allegedly discharging raw sewage into the environment.
