A 36-year-old Nigerian woman, Gbemisola Akayinode, has been arrested and charged with felony murder in Texas after her 9-year-old daughter, Oluwasikemi, died from hyperthermia.
The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences ruled the child’s death a homicide. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez confirmed the arrest on October 17.
According to court documents, Oluwasikemi was left unattended in a vehicle for over eight hours on July 1, a day when temperatures reached 99 degrees. Akayinode reportedly arrived at her nearby job at 5:45 a.m., leaving her daughter in the car with food, water, a fan, and melatonin.
When she returned from her shift at 1:53 p.m., she found the child unresponsive.
Investigators noted a conflict in her statement: Akayinode claimed she couldn’t afford daycare, but court documents state her foreman was already paying for it. The mother also allegedly tried to blame the death on ADHD medication, despite admitting to giving the child melatonin.
Oluwasikemi’s death was one of several child fatalities involving hot cars in Texas during that period.
