Umuahia, Abia State – The Public Complaints Commission (PCC) in Abia State has recorded a significant volume of public grievances, receiving a total of 720 complaints between January and October of the current year.
Federal Commissioner, Prince Madukwe Ukaegbu, disclosed this during an appearance on the Abia Broadcasting Corporation, noting that 40 percent of the complaints have been successfully resolved to the satisfaction of both parties.
The Commissioner stressed the agency’s non-partisan commitment to addressing grievances, which include those against Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), as well as civil arbitration. He used the platform to appreciate Governor Alex Otti for his efforts in repositioning the state, even as he highlighted funding as a challenge for the commission. Prince Ukaegbu also encouraged residents to utilize the PCC’s free services and called on Nigerians to be patient with the Federal Government’s economic policies. The Commission is set to celebrate its 50th year of existence in Nigeria this month.
Ombudsman Tackles Injustice, Records Early Success
In a related development, the newly established Abia State Ombudsman has registered its impact, treating 39 complaints and petitions since its creation under the Abia State Ombudsman/Public Complaints Commission and Citizens’ Rights Commission Law 2025.
Justice Kyrian Nwankpa (retd), the Head of the State Ombudsman, described the body as a “beacon for grassroots justice,” emphasizing its rising importance in tackling injustice and abuse of power. The cases handled so far cut across rights violations, administrative delays, and disputes involving civil servants and private individuals.
Justice Nwankpa, who noted that the Ombudsman does not handle criminal or conventional court cases, stressed its vital role in building public trust. He urged residents to submit written petitions to the Umuahia office, assuring that no complaint would be ignored. Although not yet officially inaugurated, Justice Nwankpa confirmed the commission remains effective and would be strengthened with the appointment of four additional commissioners.
