A routine inspection at Government Day Secondary School, Amule, has escalated into a political firestorm in Kwara State. The state’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is condemning the Executive Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Prof. Raheem Adaramaja, for what it describes as the “humiliation and public disgrace” of teachers.
The incident, which occurred on Monday, reportedly involved Adaramaja ordering teachers, including the Vice Principal, to sweep the school compound in the presence of their students.
PDP Slams “Severe Abuse of Office”
In a fiery statement, the PDP accused the SUBEB chairman of a “severe abuse of office and a public degradation” of educational professionals.
According to the party’s statement, signed by State Publicity Secretary Olusegun Olusola Adewara, eyewitnesses claimed Prof. Adaramaja was acting on Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s instructions. He allegedly berated the teachers for an untidy environment and ordered them to pick up litter, even after they explained that students had just returned from break.
The PDP questioned the administration’s standards, asking, “We ask Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq if this is the new standard for the teaching profession in Kwara? To have a Professor… stripped teachers of their dignity and compelled them to perform tasks that belong to labourers, all in the presence of their students?”
The opposition party labeled the SUBEB boss’s actions as “arrogance, insensitivity, and moral bankruptcy,” linking it to what it calls a “growing culture of oppression under the AbdulRazaq-led administration.”
“Those who rode to power under the Otoge mantra promising liberation from oppression have suddenly turned into power-drunk oppressors,” the statement read. The PDP also criticized the government’s broader record, claiming that after six years, “many schools remain dilapidated, while students learn under trees.”
The party called on the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) to defend its members and demanded that Prof. Adaramaja “immediately issue an unreserved public apology.” They also urged Governor AbdulRazaq to “publicly condemn” the action and impose disciplinary measures.
SUBEB Chairman Dismisses Claims as “Political Propaganda”
Responding to the allegations, Prof. Raheem Adaramaja dismissed the PDP’s statement as “a deliberate attempt to mislead the public through falsehood and political propaganda.”
Speaking to PUNCH Online on Wednesday, the SUBEB chairman defended his actions, framing them not as humiliation, but as a lesson in leadership.
“Cleanliness and orderliness are part of a conducive learning environment,” Prof. Adaramaja stated. “What happened at GDSS Amule was a simple reminder that teachers must lead by example in instilling discipline among students, not an act of humiliation.”
He reiterated his commitment to “discipline, accountability, and excellence” in the state’s education system, emphasizing that his actions were “guided by a sense of responsibility and service, not pride or abuse of authority.”
