The Oyo State Government formally ceded 90 hectares of land to the Federal Government on Friday for the construction of the much-anticipated Moniya Inland Dry Port in Ibadan, the state capital.
The state deputy governor, Mr. Bayo Lawal, presented the land on the Ibadan-Oyo road, Moniya, in Akinyele Local Government Area, to the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Mr. Gboyega Oyetola, who was represented by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mr. Michael Olufemi.
Lawal asserted that the Moniya Inland Dry Port is a project that will not only boost the state’s economy but will also drive the agriculture value chain, industrialisation, and infrastructure development nationwide. He added that the dry port operation would significantly ease the overcrowding at Lagos ports and simplify the clearing of goods.
Lawal urged all stakeholders to support the project to make it a swift reality.
Earlier in his remarks, Oyetola explained that the Moniya Inland Dry Port is a strategic national project designed to bring shipping services closer to importers and exporters, thereby sparking industrial and agricultural growth across the entire South-West region.
He lauded Governor Seyi Makinde for his patriotic gesture in aligning with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Federal Government. The minister described the official handover as a vivid demonstration of partnership and shared vision between the Federal and state governments to broaden economic opportunities through modern trade.
He emphasized that the project would fortify regional competitiveness, create jobs, and optimize Nigeria’s logistics chain. Also, in his goodwill message, the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Mr. Akutar Ukiyama, who was represented by the Director of Inland Transport Service, Alhaji Ahmodu Yahyah, applauded Makinde for his visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to the state’s economic advancement.
Yahyah said the Inland Dry Port, when completed, would generate direct and indirect jobs for the people, catalyze industrial growth, increase internally generated revenue, and spur rural and urban development. He added that the project would provide a platform for efficient cargo clearance and logistics operations as well as elevate the agriculture value chain.
