The management of Ebonyi State University (EBSU) has expelled three students who were allegedly involved in a shooting incident during the institution’s recent Students’ Union Government (SUG) election.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Michael Awoke announced the decision over the weekend while inaugurating the newly elected SUG executives. He described the incident as “unacceptable and criminal,” affirming that the expulsion was intended to send a clear message that violence and cultism will not be tolerated.
The expulsion follows the arrest of the three students in September by the Ebonyi State Police Command. During the SUG election, the suspects allegedly opened fire with firearms to disperse a crowd and intimidate officials, hitting one student in the process. They were also accused of attempting to attack the Dean of Student Affairs.
In his address, Prof. Awoke issued a stern warning against campus violence. “This issue of cultism is banned in Ebonyi State University as long as I am the Vice Chancellor,” he declared. “The issue of coming to the University environment with guns must stop. The issue of using guns to intimidate my lecturers to award you marks must stop with immediate effect.”
He confirmed that the case is already before a court and that the university is actively following the proceedings.
“Being a student, you unlawfully have a gun you use to intimidate your fellow students and a Dean because of the SUG election; this is not acceptable,” the Vice Chancellor stated firmly. “By the powers vested in me… these students are hereby expelled. They are no longer my students. This expulsion will serve as a deterrent to others.”
Prof. Awoke concluded by reaffirming his administration’s zero-tolerance policy on cultism, examination malpractice, and violence, stressing that EBSU must remain a peaceful centre for learning and discipline.
