The Federal Government (FG) has threatened to invoke the “no-work, no-pay” policy on the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which declared a total and comprehensive warning strike set to begin on Monday, October 13.
In a statement issued Sunday night, Folasade Boriowo, spokesperson for the Federal Ministry of Education, accused ASUU of failing to cooperate despite the government’s efforts to prevent the industrial action.
The Ministry stressed the government’s commitment to prioritizing staff welfare and academic stability under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. While emphasizing that dialogue remains the most effective and sustainable path to resolving disagreements, the government asserted its resolve to uphold the “no work, no pay” policy, calling it an extant labour law of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The FG reassured students and parents that it is firmly committed to maintaining industrial harmony, appealing to all academic unions to embrace partnership over confrontation. It further reiterated that while demonstrating goodwill and flexibility, the government will not abdicate its responsibility to uphold fairness and accountability in the use of public resources.
ASUU’s Key Demands
The union’s decision to strike is driven by several demands, including:
Conclusion of the renegotiated 2009 FGN-ASUU agreement.
Release of three-and-a-half months’ withheld salaries.
Sustainable funding and revitalization of public universities.
Payment of outstanding 25-35% salary arrears and promotion arrears spanning over four years.
Release of withheld third-party deductions (cooperative contributions, union check-off dues).
Cessation of the victimization of lecturers in LASU, Prince Abubakar Audu University, and FUTO.
