The Imo State Police Command has initiated an inquiry into the physical assault of 55-year-old Ndididamaka Agu by a group of men in Emekuku, near Owerri, the state capital.
Details of the Incident and Official Response
The command’s spokesperson, Henry Okoye, released a statement on a Tuesday in Owerri, confirming the investigation.
* Okoye indicated that the attack was allegedly committed because Agu cooperated with police personnel during an earlier investigation in her community.
* The State Commissioner of Police (CP), Mr. Aboki Danjuma, mandated the probe after a video of the assault went viral. Agu is identified as being from Umuakaliukwu Kindred, Uboegbelu, Azaraubo, Emekuku.
* In response to the CP’s directive, the X-Squad Unit has begun efforts to identify, detain, and promptly prosecute all individuals involved in the deplorable action.
Preliminary Findings and CP’s Warning
Initial investigation suggested that six men carried out the attack. The motivation was purportedly the victim’s collaboration with police officers who had visited the locality for investigative work.
* Efforts are currently underway to arrest the suspects, following which they will be formally charged in court.
* CP Danjuma vehemently denounced the act, labeling it “barbaric, inhuman, and completely unacceptable.”
* He issued a stern caution that any resort to mob justice or the intimidation of residents who lawfully aid the police will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
This incident follows a separate report in October where the Lagos Police Command launched an investigation into a viral video depicting officers assaulting a man, confiscating his phone, and driving off with his vehicle in the Surulere area.
