Imo Police Probe Officers in Viral Video Allegedly Displaying Cult Insignia

OWERRI, IMO STATE — The Imo State Police Command has launched an investigation following a viral social media video that appears to show several officers wearing insignia associated with the Vikings confraternity, one of Nigeria’s most notorious cult groups.

The video, which circulated widely on Friday, was publicized by the anti-cultism advocacy platform Naija Confra. The post triggered significant public outrage and prompted calls for immediate disciplinary action against the officers involved.

In a statement accompanying the video, Naija Confra alleged that the uniformed officers were seen in Owerri “openly disgracing the Nigerian Police Force by engaging in cult activities” while wearing berets and caps of the Vikings group.

“These are police officers in Owerri, Imo State,” the caption read in part. “They are boldly wearing Vikings (DNKI) berets and caps — an evil cult group responsible for countless deaths across Nigeria and beyond. How can such officers arrest a Vikings cultist when they are members themselves?”

The group questioned the integrity of law enforcement, adding, “This is why Naija Confra has always opposed cultism within security agencies… those institutions are our last hope for safety.”

In response to the growing backlash, the Imo State Police Command issued a press release on Friday, October 17, 2025, promising a thorough investigation into the “unacceptable display of unprofessionalism.”

The statement, signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Okoye Henry, was also shared by the former Force PRO, DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi.

“The Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, CP Aboki Danjuma, has ordered a thorough investigation into the viral video,” the statement read. “The CP strongly condemns the conduct as unethical and unbecoming of police officers.”

The command assured the public that the matter is being handled with “utmost seriousness” and that any officers found culpable will “face serious disciplinary measures in accordance with police regulations.”
