The Kano State Government has given its assent to two significant proposals aimed at bolstering power supply, infrastructure, and affordable accommodation throughout the state, according to an announcement made by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature, on Sunday.
⚡ Proposed Majority Stake Acquisition in KEDCO
The state government is moving forward with plans to acquire a controlling shareholding in the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO).
* Strategic Rationale: This initiative is a component of Governor Abba Yusuf’s comprehensive plan to reinforce the state’s power sector, encompassing generation, transmission, and distribution.
* Expected Outcomes: By assuming a decisive role in KEDCO’s ownership, the government intends to implement necessary reforms to enhance efficiency, accountability, and service delivery—addressing the long-standing issues of frequent outages and dilapidated infrastructure.
* Economic Impact: The action is projected to stimulate industrial expansion, job creation, and the attraction of local and foreign capital, essential for Kano’s economic activities that rely heavily on reliable power.
* New Policy Framework: Complementing this move, the State Executive Council also approved the Kano State Electricity Policy. This policy will serve as a blueprint for sustainable energy development, promoting the integration of renewable sources and securing long-term energy stability.
🏘️ Construction of 50 Low-Cost Housing Estates
In a parallel development, the state government authorized the building of 50 low-cost housing developments situated across 36 Local Government Areas outside the main Kano metropolis.
* Targeted Beneficiaries: This project aims to alleviate the housing shortage by providing homes accessible to low- and middle-income earners.
* Scope and Infrastructure: Each housing estate will be furnished with essential facilities, including access pathways, reliable power, and water provision, to guarantee a comfortable and enduring living environment for residents.
* Economic Stimulus: The construction phase is anticipated to significantly boost local economies and generate thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities for various professionals, including contractors, engineers, and skilled laborers.
* Commitment to Equity: The initiative is presented as evidence of the Governor’s dedication to equitable development, ensuring that all parts of the state benefit from sustained infrastructure projects that directly uplift living standards.
