In a significant political realignment, the entire Enugu State caucus in the House of Representatives has formally defected from their respective parties to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The move was officially announced during the House plenary on Thursday by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, who read the lawmakers’ letters of resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP).
The defection, which signals a major shift in the state’s political landscape, was witnessed by the Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah.
Why the Sudden Move?
According to the letters read by the Speaker, the defectors cited “unresolved internal crises threatening the stability” of their former parties as the primary reason for their departure.
However, addressing journalists after the session, the group’s spokesman, Hon. Nnolim Nnaji (representing Nkanu East/Nkanu West), provided a more strategic reason. He stated their decision was heavily influenced by a desire to align with the “project-oriented administration” of Governor Mbah and to connect the state to the federal government.
“We Refuse to Remain Spectators”
Hon. Nnaji emphasized that the move was a deliberate step to reposition Enugu State from the margins of opposition politics to the mainstream of national development.
”For too long, our dear Enugu State has remained in opposition, watching from the sidelines as others shaped the destiny of our nation and accessed opportunities that could have transformed our people’s lives. That era is over!
We refuse to remain spectators when we can be key players in Nigeria’s progress. By aligning with the APC — the party steering national transformation — we are connecting our constituency to the heartbeat of national development. This alignment will bring more projects, more jobs, better infrastructure, and greater empowerment for our youths, women, and communities.”
A New Political Landscape
This development marks a complete reversal of the political map in Enugu State.
Following the 2023 general election, the Labour Party had secured a dominant victory, winning seven of the eight federal constituency seats, while the PDP held the remaining one.
With this mass defection, the APC now controls the entire Enugu State caucus in the House of Representatives.
The defectors announced at Thursday’s plenary include:
- Martins Oke
- Anayo Onwuegbu
- Nnamdi Agbo
- Nnolim Nnaji
- Mark Obetta
In a related development, Hon. Daniel Asama, the member representing Bassa/Jos North Federal Constituency, also announced his defection from the Labour Party to the APC.
