IBADAN, NIGERIA — The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a man, Lawal Faruq, for allegedly dousing his ex-girlfriend with petrol and setting her ablaze inside a military barracks in Ibadan.
The incident occurred on Thursday after the couple’s romantic relationship ended. Faruq allegedly became enraged, claiming he and the victim, Omolola Hassan, had taken an oath never to separate.
Military personnel at the barracks reportedly intervened immediately, extinguishing the fire and rushing Hassan to Yawiri Hospital in Akobo for medical treatment. The suspect was apprehended at the scene and handed over to the police.
Adewale Osifeso, the spokesperson for the Oyo State Police Command, confirmed the incident and stated that a full investigation is now underway.
The attack is the latest in a disturbing trend of violent crimes linked to failed romantic relationships in Nigeria, highlighting a broader pattern of domestic violence across the country.
