Nasarawa Govt Shuts Lafia Modern Market Over “Deteriorating” Sanitary Conditions

The Nasarawa State Government has ordered the immediate and indefinite closure of the Lafia Modern Market, citing deteriorating sanitary conditions within the facility.

State Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Margaret Elayo, led a team of ministry officials and security personnel to seal off the market in Lafia on Tuesday, as reported by Vanguard.

Elayo stated that the decision was enforced after repeated warnings to traders to maintain a clean environment and improve hygiene practices were ignored.

“The market would remain closed until the traders’ leadership mobilises members to clean and sanitise the premises to make it fit for business operations,” she said.

As of the time of this report, all entrances to the market have been locked. Environmental sanitation officers and security personnel are stationed at the gates to ensure full compliance.

While some traders expressed disappointment over the shutdown, they pledged to cooperate with the government to clean the market and restore it to a sanitary condition.

Observers note that the poor hygiene in markets across the state is an ongoing issue, with many calling for urgent action to address negligence among traders.

This action in Nasarawa follows a similar move in Lagos State earlier in October, where the government shut down the Itedo Market in Lekki indefinitely over repeated environmental violations and illegal roadside trading. Five people were arrested during that enforcement exercise.
