The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) and the South African Air Force (SAAF) are strengthening their strategic partnership, following an official visit by the Chief of the SAAF, Lieutenant General Wiseman Simo Mbambo, to the NAF’s Tactical Air Command (TAC) in Makurdi on Monday, October 28, 2025.
The visit was aimed at enhancing professional cooperation and deepening regional airpower synergy between the two leading African nations.
”A Testament to Africa’s Capacity”
During his visit, Lieutenant General Mbambo highly commended the Nigerian Air Force for its operational excellence and dedication to growth.
According to a statement from the NAF, the SAAF Chief praised the NAF’s commitment to innovation and discipline, describing it as a model for the continent.
“The Nigerian Air Force has demonstrated remarkable professionalism and growth, reflecting Africa’s capacity to develop its own airpower solutions,” said Lt. Gen. Mbambo. “Collaboration between our Air Forces is vital to building a safer and more secure continent.”
A “Symbol of Unity” and Future Cooperation
Upon arrival, Lt. Gen. Mbambo was received by the Air Officer Commanding TAC, Air Vice Marshal Patrick Obeya, and other senior officers. The delegation received a comprehensive brief on the Command’s structure, functions, and its critical role in Nigeria’s air defence and internal security operations.
AVM Obeya described the engagement as more than just a formal visit.
“This visit is a symbol of unity and professional solidarity between two leading Air Forces on the African continent,” Obeya stated.
He added that the meeting would open new opportunities for:
- Joint training exercises
- Indigenous technological collaboration
- Enhanced operational cooperation to tackle emerging security challenges across Africa
