NIS to Launch New Emergency Passport for Nigerians Abroad

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has announced it will soon launch a Single Travel Emergency Passport (STEP). This new biometric document is intended to help Nigerians in other countries return home securely if their passports have expired, been lost, or stolen.

The plan was revealed by the Comptroller-General of Immigration, Kemi Nanna Nandap, during a joint meeting in Abuja, which Nigeria co-hosted with the French government.

According to a statement from the Service Public Relations Officer, ACI Akinsola Akinlabi, the new STEP will replace the current Emergency Travel Certificate (ETC). This move is part of the NIS’s larger reform efforts to improve identity management and border security, aligning with global best practices.

The Comptroller-General explained that the STEP is a temporary travel document. It will be issued at specific Nigerian embassies and consulates and will be valid for only a single entry into Nigeria, enhancing service delivery and identity protection.

The meeting where the announcement was made included key partners in migration management, such as NAPTIP, ECOWAS, the AU, the EU, and representatives from various African and European nations. The forum concentrated on boosting cooperation to combat migrant smuggling and human trafficking.

In her keynote address, CGI Nandap detailed the NIS’s broader reform agenda. She reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to international migration discussions and ensuring its operations meet global standards for safe, orderly, and regular mig

ration.
