The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused Governor Ademola Adeleke of allegedly harbouring the State Commander of the Osun Amotekun Corps, Adekunle Omoyele, who is reportedly wanted by the police in connection with the killing of residents in the Akinlalu community.
The opposition party, in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Kola Olabisi, consequently challenged Governor Adeleke to cooperate fully with the police investigation and immediately hand over Omoyele to the authorities.
Governor Adeleke, however, dismissed the allegations as “unfounded and baseless,” insisting that the state government would not interfere with the police’s ongoing investigation into the tragic killings.
Background of the Akinlalu Incident
The controversy follows a violent incident on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, when operatives of the Osun Amotekun Corps reportedly invaded the Akinlalu community, allegedly shooting at residents and killing three people.
A report released by the Osun State Police Command confirmed the deceased as Ibrahim Oyebamiji (26), Sefiu Oyebamiji, and Abiola Olutayo. Those injured included Adeagbo Kadijat (22), Oke-Ila Oyebamiji (60), and Fayomi Toheeb (19). Police further confirmed that Amotekun operatives removed the corpses from the scene after the attack.
While the Amotekun leadership admitted three deaths, it claimed its operatives were ambushed by “hoodlums” who had engaged them in a gunfight during an operation to recover stolen rifles. A team deployed by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has taken over the investigation and arrested five Amotekun operatives. However, Commander Omoyele has reportedly failed to honour the police invitation.
APC Alleges Hypocrisy and Cover-Up
In its statement, the APC accused Governor Adeleke of hypocrisy, noting his earlier commendation of the police but suggesting he was now protecting a key suspect.
The party’s spokesperson stated: “To prove that he was not merely paying lip service to the call for prosecution of the blood-sucking vampires… Governor Adeleke should prioritise the exposure of the Commander of Osun Amotekun, Mr Isaac Adekunle Omoyele.”
The APC explicitly claimed Omoyele was hiding in the governor’s official residence: “If the news circulating in Osogbo, the state capital, is anything to go by — that Omoyele, one of the crucial suspects in the dastardly act in Akinlalu, has been hibernating in the Government House, Osogbo, to evade police arrest — it is condemnable, irresponsible, wicked, and unpatriotic.”
The opposition further urged Adeleke to “hand over the state commander of Amotekun to the police for them to conduct a thorough investigation into the Akinlalu killings, which have become a national embarrassment.”
Governor Dismisses Claims
Reacting to the allegations, Governor Adeleke, through his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, dismissed the claims as “another example of a losing party struggling for relevance.” He reaffirmed his commitment to the rule of law.
Rasheed stated: “The Akinlalu matter is a question of law and order, and the Inspector-General of Police has acted on the matter. The police are conducting an active investigation. Our government will not intervene or interfere.”
He cautioned against politicising the tragedy, adding: “The opposition’s allegations are unfounded and baseless. The Osun APC, in want of direction and strategy, has grown to be a constant purveyor of fake news. We will not succumb to blackmail or surrender to a party that is more interested in destabilising the state than delivering good governance.”
