Police officers in Abuja on Monday forcibly dispersed protesters demanding the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
The demonstration, part of the #ReleaseNnamdiKanuNow campaign, began in the Maitama area, near the Transcorp Hilton. Police fired multiple rounds of tear gas at the demonstrators and passersby, creating panic that forced commuters, traders, and motorists to flee for safety.
The protesters—comprising civil rights activists and members of pro-democracy groups—later regrouped at the Utako area to continue their demonstration. They were chanting solidarity songs and displaying banners when armed operatives again moved in, using tear gas to scatter the crowd a second time.
The campaigners are demanding that the Federal Government comply with a 2022 Court of Appeal judgment that discharged and acquitted Kanu.
Following the dispersals, security was significantly tightened across the Federal Capital Territory. Soldiers, police, and operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) were stationed at strategic locations, including Eagle Square, the Federal Secretariat, and the Three Arms Zone. Our correspondent also observed a large number of soldiers and a gun truck at the Berger roundabout.
