Police Initiate Inquiry into Misconduct Claims Against Officers in Kwara

The Kwara State Police Commissioner, Adekimi Ojo, has called for a comprehensive investigation into allegations of illegal money demands by some police officers of the command along the Osi-Eruku highway in the Kwara South Senatorial District of the state.

This is detailed in a statement by the command’s Spokesperson, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, on Tuesday in Ilorin, the state capital.

According to Ejire-Adeyemi, the command is aware of a video clip circulating on social media claiming that officers on duty were involved in extortion. The statement read, “The Command is cognizant of a video recording circulating on social media purporting that police officers on duty were engaged in illegal solicitation of funds along Osi-Eruku road in Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State.

”The Commissioner of Police, Kwara State Command, CP Adekimi Ojo, has mandated an immediate and thorough probe into the incident. If the officers implicated have been identified and judged culpable, fitting disciplinary action will be imposed.

“The Command remains dedicated to upholding competence, integrity, and accountability in all its operations.”

SaharaReporters had reported that police personnel stationed along the Osi–Eruku highway were observed stopping vehicles and soliciting cash from motorists. The officers were reportedly utilising an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC), which was meant to be used for anti-banditry patrols in the area. In the footage, a visibly frustrated driver narrated how the policemen had neglected their core duty of safeguarding the region from abductors and were instead exploiting innocent passengers.

“They are tasked to fight kidnappers, but they are here collecting payments from motorists.

“There is no day that the kidnappers do not kill people in this area. Obo-Aiyegunle is there, Eruku is there — you don’t go there to confront the insurgents, but you are here in the city taking money from people,” he lamented.

🛣️ Community Reaction and Plea

Local residents and motorists who travel the route daily also verified that the police officers set up several unauthorised checkpoints, allegedly demanding payment from each vehicle before permitting passage. Some drivers said the refusal to cooperate often led to intimidation, confiscation of vehicle keys, or protracted delays.

Local traders and commuters expressed distress that security personnel assigned to ensure their safety were now compounding their difficulties.

They appealed to the Kwara State Commissioner of Police and the Inspector-General of Police to urgently intervene and transfer the offending officers to the forest areas where bandits have been operating with increasing impunity.
