The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has issued a caution to U.S. President Donald Trump and the American government against any interference in Nigeria’s internal affairs under the pretense of humanitarian or religious freedom intervention.
The party’s warning, communicated by SDP National Publicity Secretary Rufus Aiyenigba, follows Trump’s recent declaration designating Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC) over purported religious persecution.
🚨 SDP’s Stance on Foreign Intervention
* Sovereignty is Non-Negotiable: The SDP acknowledged the “underwhelming performance” of Nigeria’s security infrastructure but firmly asserted that the country’s sovereignty is “non-negotiable.”
* Request for Support, Not Invasion: The party urged Washington to offer concrete military and intelligence assistance to Nigeria—comparable to the support provided to allies like Israel, Egypt, and Pakistan—if the U.S. is genuinely concerned about the killings.
* Warning Against Aggression: The SDP emphasized that foreign powers must respect the limitations of the United Nations Charter and abstain from actions that could be construed as aggression.
* Concerns over Military Incursion: The party cautioned that any U.S. military incursion could result in negative outcomes, predicting “sorrow, tears, and blood,” akin to the aftermath of interventions in Iraq, Libya, and Afghanistan.
🏛️ Call to President Tinubu
The SDP also directed a strong message to President Bola Tinubu, urging him to re-focus his administration:
* Prioritize Security: The party called on the President to make the constitutional duty of securing lives and property the immediate priority, rather than engaging in “political calculations” for the upcoming 2027 general election.
* Focus on Citizens’ Welfare: The SDP stressed that securing the lives of all Nigerians, regardless of their religion or tribe, is more critical than electoral considerations, and called on the President to prioritize national security and the betterment of Nigerians’ lives for the remainder of his term.
