President Bola Tinubu returned to Abuja on Saturday after attending the Aqaba Process summit in Rome, where he joined world leaders to strengthen international cooperation against terrorism and violent extremism.
According to a statement from the State House, the President’s participation reaffirms Nigeria’s commitment to regional and global security partnerships.
The high-level meeting, co-chaired by the governments of Jordan and Italy, focused specifically on the security challenges in West Africa. The main session, held on Wednesday, October 15, was attended by King Abdullah II of Jordan, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and the presidents of Chad, Paraguay, Sierra Leone, and Togo, among other high-level delegations. The sensitive discussions on global counterterrorism coordination were held behind closed doors.
On the sidelines of the summit, President Tinubu engaged in several key bilateral discussions. He met with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni as well as with U.S. political and business figure Massad Boulos to discuss security and economic cooperation.
Additionally, the President held a significant meeting with the Vatican’s Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, to address religious harmony in Nigeria and counter disinformation campaigns that misrepresent the country’s religious diversity.
Launched in 2015, the Aqaba Process is a major counter-terrorism initiative built on preventing, coordinating, and closing operational gaps. President Tinubu’s participation in the Rome meeting underscores his administration’s focus on security diplomacy and Nigeria’s commitment to global partnerships in maintaining peace.
