MAKURDI – The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the death of Saater Aii, a notorious suspect wanted for the double murder of a local security commander and his wife. The suspect was killed during a shootout with police in Makurdi.
In a statement issued on Monday, the command’s spokesperson, DSP Udeme Edet, disclosed that Aii, a native of Wannune in Tarka Local Government Area, was the prime suspect in the assassination of Mr. Aondoakaa Yayol, the Commander of Tarka LG Hunters, on June 20, 2025.
He was also wanted for the killing of the commander’s wife, Mrs. Kashimana Yayol, on February 11, 2023. According to the police, both incidents occurred in Wannune, after which the suspect went into hiding.
The statement explained that the chain of events leading to his death began on Saturday, October 18, 2025.
“Credible intelligence revealed that the suspect had clandestinely returned to Makurdi with plans to carry out further attacks. Acting swiftly on this information, a team of detectives was deployed to apprehend him around George Akume Way, Makurdi,” Edet stated.
“Upon sighting the operatives, the suspect opened fire on them. The police responded appropriately and succeeded in subduing and arresting him.”
During the exchange, the suspect sustained gunshot injuries and was immediately taken to the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH) for treatment, where he was later pronounced dead. His corpse has been deposited at the hospital mortuary.
Items recovered from the deceased include one AK-47 rifle, one locally fabricated shotgun, several rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition, and seven SIM cards.
DSP Edet noted that the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ifeanyi Emenari, has advised all residents to desist from criminal activities and to promptly report any suspicious persons or movements to the nearest police station. She affirmed that the Command remains resolute in its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all residents of Benue.
