The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has refuted reports that leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are pressuring him to contest the 2027 presidential election.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Wike’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, described the claim as “another lie from idle minds who have nothing to contribute to the development of the country.” Olayinka asserted that the report, circulated by an online platform, was a failed attempt to create unnecessary controversy.
“Wike does not function in hiding. He does what he says and says what he does,” Olayinka stated, emphasizing Wike’s unwavering support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. “As far as Wike is concerned, it is President Bola Ahmed Tinubu till 2031.”
Clarifying the details of a supposed PDP meeting, Olayinka explained that the only relevant gathering occurred on August 20, 2023, involving PDP stakeholders from the southern region. The purpose of this meeting was to address a subsequent summit in Lagos where some party members intended to rubber-stamp a decision to micro-zone party positions allocated to the South.
The outcome of the stakeholders’ meeting was made public in a press statement titled, “Re: Purported Meeting Of PDP Southern Zoning Consultative Summit.” The statement was co-signed by numerous PDP leaders from the South-East and South-South. Signatories included state party chairmen from Imo, Abia, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers; the National Vice Chairman (South-East), Hon. Chidiebere Egwu Goodluck; and the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Hon. O. K. Chinda, among other senators and party officials.
Olayinka concluded by stressing that Wike remains fully committed to President Tinubu’s political and development agenda. “To ensure the success of the President’s re-election, Wike will continue to deliver on the Renewed Hope Agenda in the FCT by actualising the visions of the President for a federal capital city that can compete with other capital cities in the world.”
